This is reported by Associated Press and CNN.
Shortly before the incident, the aircraft took off from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman. At that time, American forces were conducting airstrikes against Yemeni Houthis, targeting a missile storage facility and a command-and-control center in Yemen's capital, Sana'a.
Additionally, several Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile were shot down during this period.
As a result, the American aircraft might have been mistakenly identified as a threat from the Houthis. The fighter jet, which had two pilots on board, was downed by "friendly fire," but the pilots managed to eject safely—one of them reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Currently, the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
