The decision to commence exercises was made following the speech of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te during last week's national day. He stated that China has no right to represent Taiwan, even if Taipei collaborates with Beijing. This provoked condemnation from China.

The Chinese military announced that the drills are taking place in the Taiwan Strait and in areas to the north, south, and east of Taiwan. The duration of the exercises remains unclear.

“The drills also serve as a stern warning to separatist actions by forces advocating for Taiwan's independence. This is a legitimate and necessary operation to safeguard national sovereignty and unity,” the statement from China reads.

They also mentioned that during the exercises, Chinese ships and aircraft are approaching Taiwan in “close proximity from various directions,” patrolling the sea and air, training to block ports, attack maritime and land targets, and seize “comprehensive advantage.”

According to Chinese state media, missile forces conducted a simulated missile launch, fighters “opened corridors for air attacks,” and bombers carried out long-range missions.

A Reuters source from Taiwan's security agencies reported that there have been no signs of missile launches so far.

Additionally, the Eastern Theater Command released a propaganda video depicting a caricature of the Taiwanese president, illustrated with pointed ears resembling a devil. The video also shows fighters and military ships around the island, culminating in an image of a fist transforming into a hammer and sword aimed at Taiwan.

The Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan stated that they are monitoring the maneuvers of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA). They firmly condemned “irrational and provocative actions by China” and promised to deploy “appropriate forces to respond and protect our national sovereignty.”
