The Azov Brigade (originally a battalion, then a regiment) was formed in the spring of 2014 and gained a reputation as one of the most capable military units in the Ukrainian army.

From 2014 to 2015, "Azov" participated in the liberation of Mariupol, the battles for Ilovaisk, and the Pavlopol-Shyrokyne offensive operation.

In 2022, "Azov" fighters, along with other units, defended Mariupol for 86 days, of which 82 were spent under complete encirclement. In May, the Mariupol garrison received an order to cease defense. More than 2,500 Ukrainian defenders were taken prisoner. As of autumn 2024, around 700 "Azov" members were still in captivity.

After its restoration, "Azov" is involved in offensive and defensive operations in the hottest areas of the eastern front.
