On the evening of January 29, an aviation accident occurred near Washington, D.C., when a passenger plane from American Airlines collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.

Both aircraft had people on board.

Emergency services are currently on-site, and it has already been reported that the bodies of the plane's passengers have been found.

CNN, citing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Department of Defense, and other U.S. government agencies, reports that the aircraft was operating flight 5342 for American Airlines and was a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet.

It had departed from Wichita, Kansas, with 60 passengers and 4 crew members on board.

Following the collision, both the passenger plane and the helicopter fell into the Potomac River near the airport.

A large-scale search and rescue operation involving divers is ongoing at the crash site.

Reagan National Airport is temporarily closed due to the emergency situation.

A source within law enforcement informed CNN that there are confirmed casualties.

As of now, rescuers have not yet retrieved any survivors from the water.

"The plane is lying in the water in pieces, and the helicopter is nearby," the statement said.
