Bolton made this statement in his commentary to the public. He pointed out that Trump might set strict deadlines for negotiations, which, in his view, could benefit Russia. Such conditions could lead to a scenario where Russia maintains control over the occupied territories of Ukraine. Bolton also noted that ideas proposing pressure on Ukraine to negotiate could adversely affect its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
"Kit Kellogg wrote before the elections about how to negotiate by threatening Ukraine with the cessation of military support from the United States if it does not engage in talks. He threatened additional sanctions against Russia if it does not negotiate. I am concerned that this also plays into Russia's hands. I believe that Putin would welcome a ceasefire that would allow Russia to continue controlling 10 percent of Ukraine's territory," Bolton added.
Bolton is particularly worried about the idea of freezing the conflict along the current front line or creating new borders without considering Ukraine's interests. He emphasized that such decisions do not align with Ukraine's national interests.
"My recommendation would be to constantly explain to Trump why the very fact of Russia's invasion demonstrates the need for security guarantees, no matter how territorial settlements might appear," the former advisor concluded.
