Just one day after the issuance of the first series of Trump's directives aimed at halting federal funding, Democrats convened to discuss actions to protect government programs.
This is reported by Politico. The publication states that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democrats held a conference call with over 100 participants, including representatives from organizations advocating for federal programs for vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women and children. Participants discussed strategies to counter Trump, who, according to Democrats, is violating the confiscation law that prohibits the president from unilaterally altering funding agreed upon by Congress.
Trump's directives regarding the freezing of foreign aid to Ukraine and other countries, as well as the suspension of funding for laws related to combating climate change, have become the basis for criticism from Democrats. They believe such actions violate the fundamental principle of "purse power," which belongs to Congress. Now, Democrats are trying to understand which specific funding Trump plans to halt and how this will impact the country.
"There is a whole range of political countermeasures that can be taken to have the right to sue to uphold the will of Congress," stated Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.
At the same time, Democrats are already planning to initiate an investigation into the legality of Trump's directives, particularly whether the administration is violating budgetary control principles.
