If Georgescu, a supporter of Russia, becomes the President of Romania, it may result in Ukraine being completely surrounded by pro-Russian countries.
Currently, Romania, along with Hungary and Slovakia, plays a crucial role in providing strategic defense capabilities for Ukraine.
Despite the Romanian Constitutional Court annulling the results of the first round of elections, the real threat of a pro-Russian victory remains. If Romania joins the ranks of countries hesitant to support Ukraine, it will significantly complicate its strategic defense.
Due to its geographical position, Romania has become NATO's most advanced point on its southeastern flank. A multinational battle group and several Alliance bases are located here, one of which is set to become the largest in Europe. Additionally, important supplies of military equipment and training for Ukrainian forces, particularly F-16 fighter pilots and marines, are conducted through Romania.
If Romania shifts its political orientation, it will pose a serious problem for Ukraine, as the only remaining route for secure supplies and support would be through Poland. Together with Hungary and Slovakia, Romania could become a significant tool for Russia in its hybrid war against the European Union, introducing new challenges for European security in the coming years.
"Romania is the backbone of security in the northwestern Black Sea. Logistically, Romania is crucial for military efforts and trade. It is one of the most pro-Ukrainian countries in the region. Any significant change in this situation would be a blow to Ukraine," emphasized Vladimir Dubovik, an expert in international relations at Odessa National University named after Mechnikov.
