According to CNN, Assad's flight to Moscow after his regime faced swift defeat represents a greater loss for Putin than merely losing an ally. Specifically, Assad's downfall raises doubts about Putin's ability to maintain power in Russia and heightens concerns regarding potential internal upheavals within the Kremlin. This weakens Russia's position in the Middle East, where Putin aimed to be a key player.
"The collapse of Assad's regime could potentially undermine Putin's negotiating power regarding the ceasefire in Ukraine, especially if his recent bellicose threats of nuclear escalation are perceived as empty," notes CNN's senior editor Nathan Hodge.
