He stated this in an interview with the British broadcaster ITV News.
“We want this very much. And every year, to be honest, we have really hoped that our Western partners would have the strength to make Putin end the war. I believe that today there are all the conditions for this. In my opinion, Trump wants this — a quick end to the war. Whether it will be quick or not, we do not know how it will turn out, but we know that we need to be strong. He is strong, but it is necessary to act decisively in alliance with the Europeans,” said Zelensky.
In particular, he pointed out the incomplete imposition of sanctions against Russia, which allowed it to adapt to the restrictions imposed.
The president noted that he would be open to any format of peace negotiations, provided there is “an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us, will support us, and will provide security guarantees”.
Zelensky stated that he would not like to freeze the front line at the current positions. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to understand what specific security guarantees would be provided to Ukraine.
He added that Ukrainians view any proposed plan not in terms of benefits for any continent but through the lens of whether it aligns with the “chance for survival for Ukrainians,” whether this plan is “alive,” or if it exists only on paper.
Recall that in September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky implemented a decision by the National Security and Defense Council prohibiting negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On January 15, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiga stated that the ban on negotiations with Putin still remains in effect.
However, recently Zelensky declared that he is ready to personally sit at the negotiating table with Putin if that is the only option for achieving peace. At the same time, he stressed that Putin is a criminal, and discussions with him are already a “compromise for the civilized world.”
According to Zelensky, there should be four participants at the peace negotiation table: Ukraine, Russia, the USA, and Europe.
