The EU suggested that the peacekeeping mission for Ukraine after the war may include participants beyond just Europeans.

The head of the European Union Military Committee, Robert Brieger, believes that a potential ceasefire in Ukraine could be monitored by a mission under the auspices of the United Nations, which would include personnel from countries beyond Europe.
В ЕС считают, что в миротворческой миссии для Украины после конфликта могут участвовать не только европейские страны.

He mentioned this in an interview with Welt, which is cited by “Ukrinform” and “Interfax-Ukraine”.

According to Brieger, the mission under the UN mandate could also include military personnel from Global South countries or the Caucasus. At the same time, soldiers from European nations will make a significant contribution to this mission, he states.

The head of the EU Military Committee also believes that maintaining a ceasefire regime in Ukraine will require a military presence "in the high five-digit range." Whether the troops will be armed, in his opinion, depends on a political decision.

Recall that back in February 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the potential deployment of his troops to Ukraine during a meeting he organized with partner countries in Kyiv in Paris. However, he noted that the states had not yet reached a consensus on this issue.

In November, the French publication Le Monde reported that some European leaders had once again returned to discussions about the possible deployment of Western troops to Ukraine due to the potential refusal of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to provide assistance to Kyiv.

Meanwhile, American media circulated a plan to resolve the war in Ukraine, which was allegedly proposed by advisors to the newly elected U.S. President.

This plan, in particular, envisions the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the frozen frontline between Russia and Ukraine, with security guaranteed by troops from European countries.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that partner troops in Ukraine could become one of the best tools to compel Russia to peace. However, he emphasized that the European peacekeeping mission should not replace Ukraine's NATO membership.

Previously, Italy and Germany expressed their readiness to send peacekeepers. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius noted that Russia should also agree to the European peacekeeping mission.

At the same time, Poland stated that it does not plan to send its troops.
