The U.S. at the UN General Assembly did not support Ukraine's resolution condemning Russia's aggression and called for its withdrawal.

The United States called on Ukraine at the UN General Assembly to withdraw its draft resolution condemning Russian aggression and proposed its own resolution text.
В Генассамблее ООН США отказались поддержать резолюцию Украины, осуждающую агрессию России, и призвали к ее отмене.

The statement was made by Dorothy Shea, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, during a meeting that was broadcast by "Suspilne".

“We cannot support Ukraine’s resolution, and we urge it to withdraw in favor of a strong statement that commits us to ending the war and working towards lasting peace,” said Dorothy Shea.

The U.S. representative emphasized that since the war began 11 years ago, the UN has repeatedly condemned Russia's gross violations of the UN Charter. General Assembly resolutions have demanded that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine, yet these resolutions have not stopped the war.

Therefore, in her opinion, today, as we mark three years since the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, the UN needs a resolution that would emphasize the commitments of all member states to finally end the war, and this, according to her, is precisely the resolution proposed by the United States.

“Our draft calls for an immediate end to the ‘conflict’ and further calls for a strong peace between Ukraine and Russia. We urge all member states, including Ukraine and Russia, to join us in these efforts,” added Dorothy Shea.

UN Considers Two Resolutions

On February 24, the UN General Assembly will consider at least two draft resolutions regarding the war – a collective and an American one.

According to "Ukrinform", the collective draft was authored by 58 countries. They call on Russia to “immediately, fully, and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”

Among the authors are all European Union countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, as well as the overwhelming majority of other European countries, notably the United Kingdom, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Georgia, as well as Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Liberia, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and others.

At the same time, AP reports that the United States has proposed its own draft resolution to the UN. The brief document acknowledges the “tragic loss of life during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict” and “calls for an immediate end to the conflict and further implementation of strong peace between Ukraine and Russia.”

On the eve, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that “the time has come to commit to ending the war.” He mentioned that “while challenges may arise, the goal of strong peace remains achievable,” and that the resolution “confirms that this conflict is terrible, that the UN can help end it, and that peace is possible.”

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, told reporters that the U.S. resolution is a “good step.”

Earlier, the Washington Post, citing its own sources, reported that the U.S. urged Ukrainian authorities to withdraw the UN resolution condemning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and replace it with a “softer” statement.
