This is reported by the New York Times, citing American officials.
According to them, the U.S. has made significant investments that helped Ukraine start and expand its drone production.
Sources from the publication claim that part of the military aid to Ukraine remained under the radar—specifically, the assistance in developing a new generation of drones, which was previously kept secret. In particular, the U.S. spent $1.5 billion to boost drone production in Ukraine.
Moreover, Washington sent intelligence personnel to Ukraine to assist in developing the program and facilitated connections between American tech companies and Ukrainian drone manufacturers.
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that American support in the drone sector has a "real strategic impact" on the war. He noted that efforts to utilize drones began after the Kharkiv counteroffensive in the fall of 2022 and accelerated during preparations for Ukraine's counteroffensive in the south in 2023.
American officials believe that the investments have made Ukrainian drones "more effective and lethal." They, in particular, helped slow down Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine and destroyed a quarter of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Sullivan added that the assistance in developing Ukraine's drone industry provided "invaluable lessons," which the Biden administration has begun to integrate into its own defense industry.
