He stated this in an interview with Breitbart News.
“Regarding the broader resolution, we believe the UN should return to its charter mission, which is to prevent and end wars and conflicts,” said Rubio.
According to him, Washington does not find it favorable to adopt anything in the UN that is “antagonistic to any side.”
Rubio pointed out that the United States presented a “compromise” to the UN Security Council, which, in the official's opinion, is “a very honest formulation that essentially states, ‘war is a terrible thing.’”
Rubio believes it is a good thing that the U.S. proposed this in the Security Council and that the Russians did not veto it.
U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the decision to vote against the general resolution: “I wouldn’t want to explain that right now, but it’s kind of self-evident.”
On February 24, the UN General Assembly voted on two draft resolutions regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war — a collective one, which was also worked on by Ukraine, and an American one.
In the end, both resolutions were supported. The first was voted for by 93 states, while 16 were against, including the U.S., Russia, Belarus, and Israel. The second document was supported by 89 states. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council approved only the American version.
According to “Ukrinform,” the authors of the collective project included 58 countries. They call on Russia to “immediately, fully, and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”
Among the authors are all EU countries, most other European countries, as well as Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Liberia, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and others. It was noted that Hungary is also on this list.
At the same time, AP indicated that the United States proposed its own UN resolution with softer wording regarding Russia. The brief document acknowledges the “tragic loss of life during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict” and “calls for an urgent end to the conflict and the establishment of a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.”
Earlier, the Washington Post, citing its own sources, reported that the U.S. urged Ukrainian authorities to withdraw the UN resolution condemning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and replace it with a “softer” statement.
