Victoria Roshchina's death, tax increases, and a strike on the airfield in Adygea: key highlights from October 10th.

Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchina has died while in Russian captivity. The Verkhovna Rada has voted in favor of increasing taxes. Defense forces struck the Khanskoye airfield in the Russian Republic of Adygea. Here are the key news highlights from October 10th.

The Death of Victoria Roshchina

The father of journalist Victoria Roshchina, who previously worked at hromadske, received notification of her death during her transfer from Taganrog to Moscow. This was later confirmed by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Coordination Headquarters representative Pyotr Yatsenko stated that Victoria Roshchina was being prepared for a prisoner exchange, but, “unfortunately, we did not make it in time”: “Her transfer from Taganrog to Moscow was part of her preparation for release”.

Strike on the Airfield in Adygea

Russia announced a drone attack on the “Khanskaya” airfield near the city of Maykop in the Republic of Adygea. A fire broke out there, which was recorded by NASA's fire monitoring system.

Subsequently, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the successful strike on the Russian airfield, involving the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate, and the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The strike targeted an ammunition depot located on the military facility. It is also known that Su-34 and Su-27 aircraft were stationed at the airfield.

Rada Approved Tax Increases

Members of the Verkhovna Rada voted 247 votes in favor of the tax increase bill. Among the new measures are a 10% military tax for groups 1, 2, and 4 of individual entrepreneurs, a 1% profit tax for group 3 individual entrepreneurs, and monthly reporting for personal income tax, etc.

At the same time, deputies rejected an amendment to raise the military tax for servicemen — it will remain at 1.5% instead of the proposed 5%.

Suspicion Against Gnezdilov

Serviceman Sergey Gnezdilov of the 56th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, who publicly deserted his military unit, has been charged with desertion. He faces up to 12 years in prison. A preventive measure for the serviceman will be determined soon.

Nobel Prize in Literature

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to South Korean writer Han Kang “for her rich poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and reveals the fragility of human life.”

She is already a laureate of the International Booker Prize for her novel “The Vegetarian.”

Zelensky Rejects War Freezing

The Italian publication Corriere della Sera reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will never recognize the occupation of part of Ukrainian territories; however, he allegedly agrees to freeze hostilities along the current front line.

In exchange for this, the Ukrainian president is reportedly seeking security guarantees from the West. Presidential advisor for communication Dmitry Litvin stated that the journalists’ information is “false” and reminded that Ukraine's position regarding the end of the war is outlined in the “peace formula.”
