The statement was made by the spokesperson of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Bideau, as cited by Le Temps and Tages Anzeiger.
Bideau reminded about the Peace Summit that Ukraine held in Switzerland, explaining that following the summit, Ukraine, Russia, and the USA were regularly informed of “Switzerland's readiness to support any diplomatic efforts for establishing peace.”
The spokesperson of the Swiss Foreign Ministry also assured that the arrest warrant for Putin issued by the International Criminal Court would not hinder his potential visit to Switzerland. He stated that the Swiss government supposedly has the authority to make exceptions if necessary for peace negotiations.
Recall that during his recent press conference, Trump mentioned that he is aware of Putin's desire to meet with him. However, he considers it “inappropriate” to do so during his inauguration, which is scheduled for January 20. Nevertheless, he later stated that preparations for a meeting with Putin are already underway — it will take place after the inauguration.
Back in 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin on suspicion of the illegal transfer and deportation of populations, including children, from occupied territories in Ukraine to Russia.
Despite this, the Russian leader has already traveled to countries that ratified the Rome Statute and were obligated to arrest him. For instance, in early September, he arrived on a working visit to Mongolia. However, he was not arrested there.
A representative of the Mongolian government stated that Mongolia could not arrest Putin as it is dependent on imports of Russian energy products. At the same time, the representative added that his country has always adhered to a policy of neutrality in diplomatic relations.
