The Russian military used chemical weapons nearly 500 times in a month, according to the General Staff.

Russian occupation forces continue to use special munitions filled with hazardous chemical substances against the Defense Forces. In December 2024 alone, there were 434 recorded instances of such munitions being deployed.

This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

They noted that along with conventional firepower, Russia is employing munitions loaded with hazardous chemical substances, such as K-51 and RG-VO, which are crowd control agents and are prohibited for use in warfare.

There is also a significant portion of munitions containing dangerous chemical compounds of an unspecified type.

In December 2024, the radiation, chemical, and biological reconnaissance units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine recorded 434 instances of such munitions being used.

Since February 2023, a total of 5,389 cases of hazardous chemical substance usage have been documented.

It is from February 2023 that the use of dangerous chemical substances by Russia has taken on a systemic nature.

“Russia is grossly violating the rules of warfare, disregarding the norms and obligations of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction,” emphasized the General Staff.

Previously, Ukrainian military officials reported that in the east, Russian troops were dropping prohibited phosphorus bombs, flechette shells — tiny metal darts, and prohibited incendiary shells with thermite mixtures (the burning temperature of such shells is approximately 3000°C), among others.

At the same time, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) believes that the evidence provided by Ukraine and Russia regarding the use of chemical weapons by both armies is “insufficiently substantiated.”
