The Main Intelligence Directorate of Russia is attempting to create "long-lasting chaos" in the United Kingdom and Europe through assassinations, sabotage, and other dangerous actions.
This was reported by the head of MI5 counterintelligence, Ken McCallum. He emphasized that the aggressive actions of Russian agents have significantly intensified since the UK began actively supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The expert noted that Russian operations have become increasingly reckless, jeopardizing national security.
For the past 20 years, the primary concern has been terrorist threats. Today, however, we are facing a situation where state-sponsored assassinations and sabotage have become a new reality,” he stated.
It is also important to highlight that the heightened level of threat is due to the leading role of the UK in supporting Ukraine. This makes the country "target number one" in the eyes of the Kremlin.
Ken McCallum provided statistics: since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over 750 Russian diplomats have been expelled from Europe, most of whom turned out to be spies. Russian intelligence services are turning to intermediaries, such as private detectives and criminal elements, to carry out tasks that were previously performed by professional spies from the GRU.
One can only hope that the international community will find effective solutions to maintain peace and stability in the region.
