The highest number of cases of intestinal infections and food poisoning last year was recorded in the capital
The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection has summarized its work for 2024, highlighting the threats to the health of Kyiv residents.
In 2024, specialists participated in the investigation of 62 outbreaks of intestinal infections that affected 755 individuals, including 417 children. Outbreaks were reported in 18 regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv. The most cases were registered in the capital – 12, and in the Odesa region – 5.
Infections were most commonly found in restaurants, with the trade sector accounting for 48 percent of outbreaks (390 affected, including 129 children), educational institutions – 35 percent (197 affected, of which 188 were children), and places housing internally displaced persons (IDPs) – 3 percent (25 affected, including 7 children). Typically, the causes were violations of food storage conditions or low hygiene standards.
Activities of 25 restaurants, stores, and school cafeterias were temporarily suspended. Nearly 588 kilograms of dangerous products were withdrawn from sale, including meat, dairy products, and semi-finished goods. A total of 44 administrative protocols were drawn up, with fines exceeding two million hryvnias imposed. Seventy-one employees who violated sanitary regulations were suspended from work.
