This was reported by the Latvian Armed Forces.

A Latvian volunteer lost his life on December 25 of last year near Novoegorovka in the Luhansk region. He was 41 years old.

Edgar Platonov fought as part of the Foreign Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“We express our deepest condolences to the family of the volunteer warrior Edgar Platonov, who died in Ukraine. The serviceman fell while selflessly fighting against the Russian occupying army,” the Latvian Armed Forces stated.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs extended his condolences regarding Platonov's death.

“Another one of our volunteers has died defending the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Our heartfelt condolences to Edgar Platonov’s family and comrades! Eternal memory to the hero,” he wrote.

As reported by Delfi, Edgar Platonov joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a volunteer. Prior to this, he had not served in the Latvian Armed Forces.

It was also noted that this is not the first Latvian volunteer to have died in Ukraine since February 2022. In the early hours of October 1, 2023, a 28-year-old Latvian citizen, Vitalijs Smirnovs, was killed as a result of a Russian drone strike near the city of Lyman in the Donetsk region.
