In Kyiv, there will be increased monitoring of poultry products due to cases of bird flu in the region.

This decision was made during the meeting of the State Emergency Anti-Epidemic Commission under the Kyiv City State Administration, reported the State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service.

“The increase in control is related to the escalation of the epizootic situation, specifically a case of bird flu among wild migratory birds in the village of Mala Skvyryka, Fursivska rural territorial community of the Bilocherkivskyi district of Kyiv region. There, in 4 swans found on the Skvyryka River, molecular-genetic studies revealed RNA of the avian influenza virus type A subtype H5N1,” the report states.

Avian influenza is a highly contagious acute viral infection that affects the respiratory and digestive organs and can lead to the death of both birds and humans. Wild birds, especially migratory waterfowl such as wild ducks, terns, swans, and gulls, are the natural reservoirs of the virus, in which the disease may progress asymptomatically. The virus is released into the environment through saliva, nasal secretions, and feces.

Humans primarily become infected with the virus through contact with domestic birds (live or dead) or their droppings and blood (especially at live bird markets). To date, there have been no recorded cases of virus transmission from human to human.
