Ukrainian defenders held the line for 242 days
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi honored the heroes who defended Donetsk Airport from Russian invaders in 2014-2015.
“Today we remember the feat of our cyborgs. 242 days of defending Donetsk Airport. They held on until the last moment in a place where it seemed impossible. This is a story of extraordinary courage. About people who endured where concrete could not. We remember the price at which the battle for our freedom and present is being fought,” wrote Volodymyr Zelensky on his Telegram channel.
Oleksandr Syrskyi noted that the soldiers who defended Donetsk Airport became a true symbol of the incredible resilience and bravery of the Ukrainian people.
“Exactly ten years ago, the heroic defense of the airport, which lasted 242 days, came to an end. The Ukrainian defenders were called cyborgs by the Russian invaders, as they could not understand why the garrison of the airport could not be captured by storm,” he reminded.
Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that the defense of the airport thwarted the plans of the Russian invaders and hindered the actions of enemy troops.
“Eternal glory and honor to all the warriors who gave their lives for our freedom! Their feat will forever remain in our hearts,” wrote the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
