Lehmi stated that the United Kingdom aims to strengthen its relationships with African countries through skill exchange and scientific achievements.
The minister made this statement following discussions on the issue of reparations at the Commonwealth leaders' summit in Samoa in October. Heads of government called for reparations for London's role in the slave trade.
Downing Street insisted that this issue would not be addressed. However, later, Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a document urging negotiations on "reparative justice" along with other Commonwealth leaders.
Foreign Secretary Lehmi revealed that Caribbean countries have developed a 10-point plan regarding compensation. However, he believes that developing nations would benefit more by acquiring technical skills and scientific expertise from the United Kingdom.
