The EU is considering resuming gas purchases from Russia, as it may encourage Moscow to engage in peaceful negotiations, according to the Financial Times.

European officials are debating whether to resume the use of Russian gas within the EU. Some believe that doing so could facilitate a potential peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

This is written by the Financial Times, citing sources.

Supporters of purchasing Russian gas argue that it would lower high energy prices in Europe, encourage Moscow to come to the negotiating table, and provide a basis for implementing a ceasefire.

Three officials told FT that the idea is backed by some German and Hungarian officials, with support from other capitals, viewing it as a way to reduce European energy costs.

At the same time, the discussion of resuming sales has angered Brussels officials and diplomats from several Eastern European countries, many of whom have spent the last three years working to reduce imports from Russia.

"This is madness. How foolish could we be to even consider this as an option?" emphasized one official.

The revival of discussions has raised concerns among some American LNG exporters looking to secure long-term supply agreements with European companies. They fear that any restart of transit through Ukraine could render their products non-competitive, two officials reported.

Moreover, resuming exports to Europe would significantly boost Moscow's revenues. Before the full-scale war, pipeline supplies from Russia accounted for about 40% of the EU's total imports.
