He reported this in an X and in an interview with the Independent.
Lopresti visited Ukraine while still serving as a Member of Parliament and advocated for increased support for Kyiv in Parliament. However, after the Conservative Party's defeat in the elections in July 2024, he lost his seat in Parliament.
Later, he returned to Ukraine to assist a charitable organization. By that time, he already intended to join the military.
“I applied to join the legion in November. It took time to find the best unit to utilize my experience and skills,” the man explained.
Lopresti is not on the front lines but performs support roles. He is responsible for diplomacy, arms procurement, as well as some work with veterans and charitable organizations operating in Ukraine.
He currently resides in Kyiv but frequently travels to other regions. In particular, last week he visited Kharkiv and Poltava.
The former MP emphasizes that it is “a great honor and a huge” privilege to serve in the Ukrainian army. He is convinced that Ukrainians are fighting not only for their own state but also for Europe and the entire “free world.”
“If the paths win in Ukraine, we all know that it won’t stop there. Dictators must be defeated, or they will never stop. […] Ukraine needs support and the tools to win for all of us,” Lopresti stressed.
